TM 5-3895-383-24
Camshaft timing
2.
Remove two bolts (3) and carefully remove camshaft
retainer (4) with the camshaft from the cylinder block. If
necessary, remove camshaft gear (5) from the camshaft
with a press.
NOTE:
The following steps are for the installation of the
camshaft.
3.
If the camshaft gear was removed, use the following
procedure to install the camshaft gear. Heat the
camshaft gear (5) to a maximum temperature of 315C
(600F).
4.
Align the key in the camshaft with the groove (keyway)
in gear (5). Install gear (5) on the camshaft.
5.
Carefully install the camshaft in the cylinder block,
positioning retainer (4) and install bolts (3).
NOTE:
When installing camshaft, be sure that number
one cylinder is at top center, (TC), of the
compression stroke. Camshaft timing is very
important. The timing marks on the idler gear
must be in alignment with the timing marks on the
camshaft drive gear and the crankshaft drive gear.
For more information on timing of the engine,
refer to the Specifications section, SENR3582.
NOTICE
Do not over torque bolts (1). Damage to the gasket may
occur.
6.
Position gasket, if equipped, install cover (2) and install
bolts (1).
NOTE:
Later engines do not use a gasket. In this
situation use 1U-8846 Liquid Gasket.
