10.
Position the drum support housing in a press and, using
Tool (B), press bearing (8), lip-type seal (13) and
spindle (12) from housing (9).
11.
Remove housing (9) from bearing (8) and spindle (12).
12.
Remove seal (11) from housing (9).
13.
Remove bearing (4) from housing (9).
14.
Remove bearing races (10) from housing (9).
15.
Remove bearing (8) and lip-type seal (13) from spindle
(12).
NOTE: The following steps are for the assembly of the
drum support housing.
16.
Install two bearing races (10) into housing (9) with a
press or a hammer and a brass drift.
17.
Install bearing (8) into housing (9) with the hub flange
upright.
NOTE: The bearing should be clean and wiped dry of any
lubricating oil. Bearing assemblies which have oil
present will affect rolling torque readings.
18.
Install lip-type seal (13) in housing (9). The lip-type seal
must be installed flush with the end of the housing and
the seal spring located to the inside of the housing
(towards the bearing race).
19.
Apply grease to seal (11) and install the seal onto
housing (9).
20.
With spindle (12) resting on flange end, carefully lower
housing (9) onto spindle shaft until bearing (8) contacts
the spindle shoulder. Press the housing onto the shaft
by pressing on the small race end facing up towards the
press.
21.
Press bearing (4) onto spindle (12) until a slight bearing
end play 0.08 to 0.13 mm (.003 to .005 in) is obtained.
Measure the rolling torque of the seal and bearing
components.
22.
Press bearing (4) until rolling torque increases 1.13 to
1.70 Nm (10 to 15 lb-in). above the rolling torque
measured in step 21. If the increase is greater than
1.13 to 1.70 Nm (10 to 15 lb-in), tap on the end of
spindle (12).
23.
Install washer (3).
24.
Apply 4C-9507 Retaining Compound on the threads of
lock nut (2). Use Tool (A) to install lock nut (2) on
spindle (12).
25.
While rolling the housing to seat the bearings, tighten
lock nut (2) to a minimum torque of 375 Nm (275 lb-ft).
The assembly should have no endplay. The rolling
torque must increase 1.13 to 4.52 Nm (10 to 40 lb-in)
above the rolling torque measured in step 21. This will
result in a bearing preload of 0.025 to 0.050 mm (.001 to
.002 in).
26.
Tap the end of the spindle and check the rolling torque
again. If the rolling torque did not remain the same as
measured in step 25 tighten lock nut (2) again.
27.
Insert a punch through the speed sensor hole in the
housing, and stake lock nut (2) in two places.
28.
Install three plugs (6) and magnetic plug (7).
29.
For the drum support housing removed from the right
side (vibratory side) of the drum assembly, install O-ring
seal (5) and spacer (1).
30.
For the drum support housing removed from the left side
of the drum assembly, install the O-ring seal, cover and
four bolts.
