Fluid Spillage Containment
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and
repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with
suitable containers before opening any compartment or
disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to
"Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and
supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar
machines. Dispose of fluids according to local regulations and
mandates.

The engine should be at Top Center, and the timing
marks for the idler should be in line with the crankshaft
gear. Identify the location of the timing marks on the
crankshaft drive gear and the camshaft idler gear
assembly.
4.
Identify the type of idler group on the engine. See Type
1, Type 2, and Type 3 illustrations. Once the idler type
is identified, remove the three bolts that hold the idler to
the block and remove idler shaft (3) and the camshaft
idler gear assembly (2). Separate the idler gear
assembly (2) from idler shaft (3) and remove the sleeve
bearing from the camshaft idler gear. Use Tool (A) and
a press to remove the bearing.
