Be prepared to collect the fluid withsuitable containers before opening any compartment ordisassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to"Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools andsupplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillarmachines. Dispose of fluids according to local regulations andmandates.1.Remove external components, if equipped.2.Remove 18 bolts (1) and the washers that hold the fronthousing to the cylinder block. Remove the fronthousing. Clean the sealant from the backside ofhousing and block.Typical3.The engine should be at Top Center, and the timingmarks for the idler should be in line with the crankshaftgear. Identify the location of the timing marks on thecrankshaft drive gear and the camshaft idler gearassembly.4.Identify the type of idler group on the engine. See Type1, Type 2, and Type 3 illustrations. Once the idler typeis identified, remove the three bolts that hold the idler tothe block and remove idler shaft (3) and the camshaftidler gear assembly (2). Separate the idler gearassembly (2) from idler shaft (3) and remove the sleevebearing from the camshaft idler gear. Use Tool (A) anda press to remove the bearing.8-27
