TM 5-3895-383-24
NOTE:
The shim located under bearing cup (15) is used to
adjust the differential bearing preload.
23.
Install the shim and bearing cup (15) from inner brake
housing (13).
24.
Apply 4C-9507 Retaining Compound on the threads of
the six bolts. Put inner brake housing (13) in position on
the outer brake housing, and install two nuts (14) and
the six bolts. Tighten the two nuts to a torque of 105 to
143 Nm (77 to 105 lb-ft). Tighten the six bolts to a
torque of 150 to 190 N m (110 to 140 lb-ft).
25.
Use lifting straps and a hoist to position left side axle
assembly (9) on the differential housing. Install 11 bolts
(10). Tighten the bolts to a torque of 190 to 230 Nm
(140 to 170 lb-ft).
26.
Attach lifting straps and a hoist to the right side axle
assembly. Remove the 11 bolt, and remove the right side
axle assembly from the differential housing.

27.
Install sun gear (26) in the differential assembly. Use
Tooling (H) (Item 3) and a torque wrench to check the
differential bearing preload (rolling torque). The
differential bearing preload (rolling torque) should be
2.26 to 10.17 Nm (20 to 90 lb-in). If the bearing
preload is not correct, it will be necessary to change
shim under bearing cup (15) in the inner brake housing.
The shim is available in different thicknesses.
28.
When the correct differential bearing preload (rolling
torque) has been obtained, use lifting straps and a hoist
to position right side axle assembly (72) on the
differential housing. Install 11 bolts (73). Tighten the
bolts to a torque of 190 to 230 N m (140 to 170 lb-ft).
