9.
If the planetary gear group, axle bearing or axle seal
have been replaced, the axle shaft rolling torque and
end play must be checked. Use the following
procedures to check the axle shaft rolling torque and
end play to determine the correct thickness of shim (32).
a.
Install Tooling (H) (Item 2) on the right side axle
housing as shown.
b.
Use a torque wrench to check the bearing preload
(rolling torque). The bearing preload (rolling torque)
should be 2.3 to 5.6 N m (20 to 50 lb-in).
c.
If the bearing preload (rolling torque) is too high, it will
be necessary to replace the 9R-2443 Spacer with a
9R-2444 Spacer which is 2.16 mm (0.085 in) thick.
d.
If the bearing preload (rolling torque) is too low,
position Tooling (J) as shown and check the axle
shaft end play.
e.
If the axle shaft end play is 0.08 mm (0.003 in) or
more, replace spacer (32) with a spacer one size
smaller for every 0.10 mm (0.004 in) or portion of 0.10
mm (0.004 in) end play measured.
Example: If the axle shaft end play is 0.46 mm (0.018
in), replace spacer (32) with a spacer that is five sizes
smaller.
f.
Repeat Step b to verify that the axle shaft bearing
preload (rolling torque) is correct, then remove
Tooling (H).
10.
Install lock (29) on the axle retainer bolt. If necessary,
tighten the axle retainer bolt until the lock slides freely
over the axle retainer bolt. The maximum torque for the
axle retainer bolt is 750 N m (550 lb-ft).
11.
Use Tooling (A) to support the right side axle assembly.
Install outer brake housing (27) and brake torque pin
(28) in the right side axle housing.
